3.1 About online lessons

OurMandarin.com lessons are composed of varied everyday, practical dialogues that range from the "Newbie" to the "Advanced" level. In each lesson, two teachers will guide you through the dialogues and breakdown important grammar phrases and key terms. It is important to note that our lessons are not arranged in any chronological order and thus, we encourage everyone to explore our archive and search for lessons that interest you the most.

Newbie

A Newbie is someone that has had no or very little exposure to Chinese. In these lessons, you learn the fundamentals of the language through simple, practical dialogues that will present plenty of vocabulary. Most of the lessons are covered in English, and the Chinese that is used is explained thoroughly and your understanding is reinforced with exercises at the end. You should explore Newbie level lessons if you are gearing up for a first trip to China and want to be able to get along in the country, or if you want to strengthen your command of the basics of Chinese.

Elementary

The next step up from Newbie is Elementary. Elementary level students will learn syntax, vocabulary, and grammar structures in more detail, which will provide you with a larger base for study once you get to the Intermediate level. By the end of this stage, you should be able to understand and create simple Chinese sentences and phrases without much effort. Like all of our lessons, there are exercises available to help you test your newfound knowledge.

Intermediate

An intermediate level student will be able to understand not only solitary sentences, but whole conversations! And you will be able to take part in them, too, forming proper sentences on your own. With the help we provide in these lessons, you’ll be better able to recognize syntax and continue to build your vocabulary. Also, your listening skills will be advanced by continually hearing your hosts speak in Chinese. This will hone your speaking abilities to be able to reflect real Chinese tones when conversing.

Upper Intermediate

If you can understand what people are saying, you can speak without taking too much time to think about vocabulary and grammar, and you can recognize quite a few Chinese characters, you’re a higher intermediate student. You should explore this level if you want to learn more specific terminology and more advanced grammar structures to be able to delve deeper into topics of discussion.
